Trigger happy dogs, kids and gun safety-Best Gun Lock News

This week, for gun owners out there, we’re sharing some gun storage news and stories we've read since the beginning of the year. Why are we sharing these with you? We'd love to show you what drives our passion for manufacturing the best portable gun lock. We're all about preventing injuries and deaths due to firearm accidents.

Safe gun storage is for the dogs

Believe it or not, our furry friends sometimes fire a gun--unintentionally, of course! These freak accidents are completely preventable with SafeGunLock.

  • A dog shot a man from Tennessee in his own bed. "A bullet grazed the Memphis man’s thigh after his one-year-old pit bull got his paw stuck in a gun’s trigger guard." [The Guardian]
  • It wasn't the first unsecured firearm accident by a pooch. In 2018, a dog pulled a trigger on its owner. "An Iowa dog owner was hospitalized after being unexpectedly shot by his pet while playing together." [The Guardian]

Getting schooled for gun safety

Start them young

Some states are passing bills for gun safety training in schools. We think it makes sense. There's driver's ed, after all. And thousands of firearm safety training schools offer classes for adults all throughout the world.

If you live around unsecured guns, the right training can go a long way in preventing unintentional firearm deaths. It doesn't matter how old you are. Here's some recent news on gun safety legislation in public schools that will hopefully help families stay safe and secure.

  • From Salt Lake City, Utah: "Utah students in as early as kindergarten would be required to learn about firearm safety in the classroom under a bill that passed the state House with overwhelming support Friday." [KTAR News/Associated Press]
  • Arkansas is also joining the club: "The aim of the law is to protect children from the accidental and potentially deadly discharge of firearms by teaching them what to do if they come across an unsecured gun." [KATV]

Doctors learning about firearms

Cincinnati Children's leads new research that aims to teach pediatricians how to talk to families about gun safety. This is critical because firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death in children in the U.S.

  • "The creation of, and investment in, this training is predicated on the idea that pediatric providers endorse having the responsibility to counsel families in clinical practice but often do not due to minimal firearm-related education, limited knowledge of secure storage devices, a lack of training on firearm safety counseling techniques, and insufficient time during visits.  [Research Horizons]
