On April 11, Walk the Talk America’s podcast "Guns & Mental Health" hosted SafeGunLock’s advisor Scot Thomasson. Getting Thomasson on the podcast was a no-brainer--we're all about gun safety and so is Walk the Talk, a pro-2A non-profit bridging the gap between mental health and responsible firearm ownership.
We also aligned with the podcast's theme. In their words: “. . . an honest and comprehensive discussion about guns and mental health. Two highly stigmatized cultures that have long stood across from each other, refusing to collaborate whenever tragedy strikes. That trend ends now. For firearms owners, clinicians, and the curious public.”
During the show, host Michael Sodini and co-host Kevin Berry asked our advisor Scot Thomasson to talk about his fascinating career in the firearm industry. They also touched upon other important subjects:
•Our partnership with the Purple Heart Foundation
•Suicide prevention among veterans
•How cable locks can damage a handgun
•How locking practice is as important as target practice
•And many more topics of interest to responsible gun owners
And most importantly--how gun safety should never be an afterthought. We actually counted the number of times Thomasson and the hosts said "afterthought" -- a total of 9. SafeGunLock designed a portable handgun lock to prevent gun deaths before it's too late. With responsible gun ownership, afterthoughts actually happen before tragedy strikes.

We've excerpted two moments from the podcast below. Learn about how Thomasson went from ATF to advisor and what he loved about SafeGunLock as soon as founder Steve Zaleznick asked him to come on board.
Michael Sodini: “I want to know you made the transition from being an ATF agent to working in the firearms industry to what you’re doing with SafeGunLock right now.”
Scot Thomasson: “While on its face it would seem pretty unusual, but it’s actually a natural progression. Most ATF agents and gun guys, sportsmen or firearm enthusiasts, contrary to belief out there, are really responsible people who are like-minded. So moving from ATF into the gun industry was pretty normal. I retired as chief of firearms operations, inspections and investigations fell under me, so when I retired I had a lot of great contacts and it was easy to move straight into that. But an important part of all this is that we’ve been facing a huge issue in this country with mental health and access to firearms. So those two came together and that was also part of the natural progression from ATF to SafeGunLock advisor. It all comes down to responsible gun ownership and responsible gun ownership is locking your firearm up.”
Michael Sodini: “Did you come across a company like SafeGunLock and say ‘oh, that’s intriguing, that’s an interesting way to secure your firearm’ or did they reach out to you because of your expertise and history?”
Scot Thomasson: “They reached out to me actually. The founder of SafeGunLock is a really interesting guy. He wanted to know what I thought about the product. I’ve been watching it since its prototype. When he finally went to production with it, I have to say, it really captured my attention because it’s so unique. It’s probably the best portable gun lock on the market and I don’t say that lightly. I’ve had every gun lock known to man, owned them and used them, but SafeGunLock is so unique and different and so innovative, it allows you to do things that other gun locks don’t do.”
