Defining responsible gun ownership

The Murder Sheet, a weekly true crime podcast hosted by journalist Áine Cain and attorney Kevin Greenlee, recently interviewed Scot Thomasson, one of our advisors who came to SafeGunLock after a remarkable--and fascinating--career in the ATF.

When asked about the gun violence problem in America, Thomasson says there's "no silver bullet" and hones in the one thing that every gun owner can do to improve gun safety--responsible gun ownership.

But first, Thomasson says, we need to define what that means: “Being a responsible gun owner means that you safely store your firearm and it's something as simple as that."

While acknowledging that most people who own guns "love their communities" and "want to protect themselves," the only way to reduce gun-related accidents and unintended use is by "restricting access."

Thomasson goes on to discuss a few assumptions that aren't compatible with responsible gun ownership:

• Assuming your kids won't play with firearms, even when you train them to use them properly
• Assuming it's better to not lock up your gun in case you need it

Thomasson also discusses how some states, like Virginia and Louisiana, are recognizing the importance of firearm safety with secure gun storage and are now offering refund incentives to gun buyers who lock their guns. It's not surprising--with gun violence, gun theft and suicide by firearm on the uptick, products like SafeGunLock solve the problem of keeping anyone but the gun owner from pulling the trigger.
